FAQ: At What Age Can A Person Be Issued A Permit To Purchase A Handgun in Michigan?
Ask The Michigan Firearms Instructor
Q: This OC (Open Carry) law is very confusing. Research says you can be 18 to open carry in Michigan. But when I went to the 36th precinct they said you have to be 21 to obtain the permit to purchase a firearm. What is the real deal??
A: You can legally own a firearm at 18 years of age. However, you can't buy a pistol from a licensed gun dealer until you are 21 years of age - federal law. Thus, you must get a Pistol Purchase Permit from your local law enforcement agency so that you can buy a pistol from a relative, friend, or another private person.
In contrast, a person 18 years old can buy a long gun from anyone. Moreover, before you take the "Open Carry Plunge," take a class to learn the nuances of open carrying a handgun legally in Michigan.
If your local precinct fails to issue you a permit, contact an attorney skilled in firearms law.

You are strongly encouraged to not only conduct your own independent research but to also consult with a competent and qualified attorney before acting upon any information in this article. Laws covering self-defense, lethal force, firearms, and the Michigan Concealed Pistol License and their enforcement are always subject to change due to laws being amended, politics conducted in the Prosecutor's Office, and election results at all levels of government. Ignorance of the law, legally speaking, is not a valid excuse for running afoul of it. The penalties and fines imposed upon violators of firearms related offenses are stiff and severe.
