Detroit Firearms Instructor will run a Three Day "Personal Protection Awareness Weekend" event to provide FREE safety information and training to metro area residents.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Detroit, Michigan - Monday, July 30th, 2012 - Local community safety advocate, Rick Ector, is organizing a three day event in August to provide FREE personal protection and community safety information to metro-Detroit residents. The event, "Personal Protection Awareness Weekend," features a day of free personal and community seminars, a day dedicated to providing free firearm safety training for at least 50 women, and an Open Carry gun rights dinner in Detroit.

The weekend long event was the brainchild of Ector - a NRA certified firearms instructor - who wanted to expand his community service projects to include activities not dedicated solely to handguns. Ector states, "I realize that firearm ownership and usage is not an option that everyone in our community is ready to embrace. So, I branched out and partnered with other local community service groups to provide access to safety info that details other options. Given the current state of inadequate public safety resources, learning how to stay safe from violent is a topic on everyone's mind these days."

The free seminar training, taking place on Saturday, August 11th, features safety presentations from several local organizations: Sisters Acquiring Financial Empowerment (SAFE), It Takes A Village Ya'll, the Detroit Police Department, Michigan TASER Distributing, Michigan Open Carry Inc., and Rick's Firearm Academy of Detroit. Rick Ector Discusses the Colorado Mass Shooting on the Charlie Langton Show

Earlier today, I made a live in-studio appearance on WXYT 1270's "Charlie Langton Show." Today's show made history as the topic of the day was discussed for a full two hours.

On the program, we discussed a litany of interrelated topics: firearms, gun rights, gun control, mass shootings, Crime Empowerment Zones, and responsibility. Today's topic was obviously inspired by the recent mass shooting of 70+ plus people in a Colorado movie house. In that incident, 12 people have already died, 11 people are in critical condition, and 70 people were injured.

Detroit Gun Rights Advocate's Boycott IHOP Page Nets 1,000th Supporter

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Detroit, Michigan -- July 18th, 2012 -- Detroit Gun Rights Advocate's Protest Site Against Local International House of Pancake Restaurant (IHOP) Nets 1,000th Supporter.

The "Boycott The Detroit IHOP - Crime Empowerment Zone" Page, a pro-gun page on Facebook has just netted its 1,000th supporter. The boycott site was created by a local Michigan Concealed Pistol License Class Teacher, Rick Ector, in response to that local restaurant's active ban on the possession of all legally carried firearms - openly carried or lawfully concealed carried with a state of Michigan Concealed Weapons Permit.

In the state of Michigan, the open carry of a pistol in a visible holster is legal without a license, as long as the carrier is 18, the carrier is on foot, the carrier avoids pistol-free zones, and the pistol is registered to the carrier.

Ector supports the local IHOP management's right to ban gun-toting patrons from its premises. He stated, "I am an ardent supporter of private property rights. However, I am also a strong supporter of the First Amendment, as well as the Second Amendment. If they don't want lawful firearms owners dining there, I will get the word out and encourage them not to patronize that establishment. We now have 1,000 supporters; the message is reaching our market."

Additionally, Ector is currently promoting the 2012 "Legally Armed In Detroit" Second Annual Open Carry Dinner in Detroit on Monday, August 13th. It is an event designed to not only educate the public about the legality of open carry in Michigan but to also provide a gun friendly environment for Second Amendment advocates to fellowship. Pastor Kenn Blanchard (Urban Shooter Podcast) and Mr. John Pierce (OpenCarry.org Founder) will both be speaking.

Celebrity Will Not Protect You From Violent Crime In Detroit

As a Personal Protection Instructor, I have many conversations with recent crime victims who now have a desire to assume a more active role in their safety. One common theme in these discussions is a shattered perception that they would not be selected for victimization.

In their previous mindsets, violent offenses and crimes only happen to other people - not to nice folk like themselves. As a person, who was robbed at gunpoint, I know all too well that it can happen to anybody. In fact, as a direct result of three recent high-profile robberies of well known people in the Detroit area I stress that it is not simply a matter of if they are going to be violently attacked but a matter of when it is going to happen. No one is immune from being attacked regardless of his fame, celebrity, or status.

In May, a well known recording artist and internationally renowned religious figure - Pastor Marvin Winans - was violently assaulted at a Detroit gas station in broad daylight. From a published account in the media, Winans was surrounded by three men who pulled him away from vehicle, was thrown to the ground, and was savagely beaten. Ultimately, the assailants stopped beating him and left the scene with his 2012 Infiniti QX56 SUV, a Rolex watch reportedly worth $15,000, and $200 in cash.

In May, it was also reported in the local media that a former Chief of the Detroit Police Department, Mr. Stanley Knox, was violently attacked at his home in broad daylight. Just before the attack, Mr. Knox, was reportedly mowing the front lawn of his residence when he was asked for directions by an unspecified number of assailants. They then produced a firearm, assaulted Mr. Knox, and left the scene with his gold necklace and bracelet.

Less than a couple of weeks ago, a sitting member of the Michigan House of Representatives - Rep. Jimmy Womack - was violently attacked. During the incident, which was reported in the local media, three predators observed Womack at a convenience store and targeted him for a carjacking. Despite having three men pointing firearms at him, Womack refused to surrender his car but was relieved of his cash - a reported $300.

In all of the above incidents, the victims were all well known celebrities who were violently attacked in the city of Detroit. By the grace of God, none of them suffered any permanent injuries. However, the moral of this post is abundantly clear - status and celebrity does not make you immune from being selected for victimization. If they can be crime victims, so too can you be.

When you are selected for a violent offense, your odds of survival will be greatly increased if you know before-hand how you will respond. Failing to plan, as a often told adage says, is planning to fail. Whatever you decide - passive victimization or armed response - is your option. Preferably, you will have made a decision either way before it eventually happens.

Most Firearm Accidents Are Negligent Acts

Within the last 30 days, there have been three highly publicized incidents in southeast Michigan that have been inaccurately characterized in the media as "accidents" involving firearms. As a credentialed Firearm Safety Instructor, my professional opinion is that most so-called firearm accidents are really negligent acts. As such, this article will recount the three aforementioned incidents and provide a rationale for classifying them as negligent acts instead of as accidents.

Before we get started in earnest, we should define a couple of terms that are usually tossed about casually and used without a precise definition. For this purpose, I consulted an online Merriam-Webster dictionary. The two relevant terms and their definitions are listed as the following:
Accident
An unforeseen and unplanned event or circumstance.

Negligent
Failure to exercise care that a reasonably prudent person would exercise in like circumstances.
On June 12th, a Southfield man severely injured himself after reportedly trying to physically adjust the position of an unholstered .40 caliber Glock semi-automatic handgun in his pants. Instead, he unintentionally pulled the trigger and the discharged bullet passed clean through his penis and entered into his thigh. The victim was lucky that the bullet did not sever his appendage and did not strike his femoral artery in his leg.

It was not published in the media why this firearm owner did not properly secure his firearm in a holster. The specific purpose of a holster is to provide a safe and secure means of carrying a firearm on a person's body. In this specific case, he should have used an inside-the-waistband (IWB) holster that completely covered the trigger. Had he done so, the firearm would not have moved around inside of his clothing which was the reason why he stuck his hands in his pants in the first place. Furthermore, had he needed to put his hand in his pants for any other reason, he would not have been able to unintentionally pull the trigger on his handgun.

This shooting was not an accident, as defined earlier in this article. If he had exercised care that any reasonable person would have exercised in the same situation, he would have been using a holster to secure his firearm. This incident was totally predictable and preventable and is hence a negligent act.

On June 30th, a Howell man was reportedly shot and killed at a gun range by his friend who was attempting to clear a malfunction with an AK-47 rifle. The firearm operator pulled the trigger while the victim was reportedly downrange in the direction of authorized shooting. This shooting incident was also negligent.

It is standard operating procedure at gun ranges for all persons on the range to not be physically beyond the firing line without a "Cease-Fire" command being issued and all persons on the firing range being alerted of it. As such, it would have been verified that all shooters had taken their fingers off the triggers of the firearm they were handling. Moreover, all shooters could have also placed the firearms on a benchrest while keeping their muzzles pointed in a safe direction. Only until all of the aforementioned acts were done, should a person venture downrange at a gun range.

Had reasonable care been exercised on the range, standard range rules would have been followed by the participants which would have prevented this predictable tragedy. As a consequence, a young man was needlessly killed by his friend. This was no accident.

On July 8th, a woman was fatally shot by a bullet discharged by an off-duty police officer's department issued Smith & Wesson "M&P" .40 caliber semi-automatic handgun while he was reportedly wearing it inside an IWB neoprene holster at a fish-fry event at his home.

According to details provided by the Detroit Police Department (DPD) at a press conference conducted on July 9th, it was also disclosed that a preliminary investigation found that the firearm discharged while the victim was dancing with the officer from his rear and while she was "manipulating" his waist. Moreover, DPD's preliminary investigation had not found any evidence that neither the officer nor any other person other than the victim had touched the allegedly holstered firearm.

There has been much speculation conducted by the public surrounding the details of this shooting, which was called "very tragic, unfortunate, and unintended" by the police chief during the press conference. It has centered on how the firearm could have discharged if the firearm was holstered and how the victim was shot in the chest when firearms holstered in IWB holsters position the muzzles towards the ground.

Regardless of how the bullet was discharged from the officer's holstered gun, it was that officer's duty to safeguard his firearm at all times. Carrying a firearm is a grave responsibility that requires users to prevent unauthorized others from having access to it. If the firearm was indeed holstered in his pants, he failed to secure his pants.

The police chief stated during the press conference that this incident should have never happened. On that point, I agree. However, I am stating that it was no accident. The officer's failure to safeguard his firearm made it negligent. He is a 16 year veteran of the police department and should know how to safely holster and safeguard his firearm to prevent unauthorized access and negligent discharges.

In all three incidents explored in this article, the deaths and injuries experienced by the victims were preventable. Had reasonable precautions been taken, these incidents would not have happened. In my opinion, it is reasonable for a person not to operate or even attempt to operate a firearm without receiving fundamental training. That training should encompass basic firearm safety, basic firearm handling, and basic range safety training. Furthermore, once that training has been acquired, it should be practiced every single time that a trained person entertains the idea of handling, carrying, or operating a firearm. To do otherwise is negligent.

Rick Ector Discusses Guns, Alcohol, and Dancing on the Charlie Langton Show

Earlier today, I made a live in-studio appearance on WXYT 1270's "Charlie Langton Show."

On the program, we discussed firearms, holsters, and alcohol. Today's topic was obviously inspired by a recent shooting of a 25 year-old woman at the home of an off-duty police officer's home where a fish-fry was being held. According to published accounts, the woman was fatally shot with one bullet that hit both her lung and heart while she was either tugging, dancing, or hugging the officer while behind him.

That topic obviously is of interest to people who have been following the shooting of the young woman who was fatally shot at the home of an off-duty Detroit police officer.

Please listen to the show and call in with your feedback and questions.

Listen in live over the Internet.
