Tomorrow morning (Saturday) at 9:00 a.m. - August 30th, 2012 - I will make my first appearance on the "Outspoken Sportsman" radio show. Ostensibly, it is a show broadcast from the Upper Peninsula. We are probably going to do two live segments. I will be interviewed live over the phone.
During the two live segments over the air we will discuss an issue that has been discussed a great deal in Detroit over the last 72 hours: the Detroit Police Department's Gun "Buy-Back" Program. That topic obviously is of interest to people who are concerned about gun rights and governmental interference in every aspect of our lives.
According to recent news reports a local county jail system has released over 200 inmates early, there have been 240 homicides in Detroit as of this past Sunday, and there are at least 21 active serial rapists running free in Detroit. Will a gun buy-back solve Detroit's violent crime problem? I don't think so but tune in and give us your feedback!
Please listen to the show and call in with your feedback and questions.
Listen in live over the Internet.

A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Detroit Police Gun Buy-Back
Detroit, Michigan -- During a Detroit gun buy-back program conducted yesterday at a local church, a group of gun rights activists staged an event of their own - a firearm rescue operation.
On Thursday, August 30th, the Detroit Police Department (DPD) and the St. Cecilia Catholic Church conducted a gun buy-back event which netted a reported 365 firearms. Predictably, the organizers announced that the program was a success and that the city would be safer, as a result of citizens voluntarily disarming themselves. Apparently, these folks do not know that there are at least 21 confirmed serial rapists in Detroit and that there have been at least 240 homicides this year, as of last Sunday.
This year's haul of 365 firearm purchases pales in comparison to 737 guns they bought in August of last year. Of course, they'll tell you that just one junk gun bought from a widow means that one person may not get shot as a result. This conjecture flies in the face of the fact that gun buy-backs have no measurable effect on violent crime. Furthermore, the police are not asking any questions about the guns such as how they were acquired. These events are conducted for the sake of appearances - another "feel good" media story on how hard the police are "trying" to make our city safer.
Imagine the surprise that the gun buy-back organizers must have felt when about 20 gun rights activists arrived to the scene carrying signs which promised to pay more cash than the church. For the record, the official prices being paid to participants were $10 for pellet guns, $25 for inoperable junk guns, $50 for working firearms, and $100 for so-called "Assault Weapons" - whatever those may be.
The "gun rescue" was organized by both Michigan Open Carry, Inc. and followers of the "Legally Armed In Detroit" blog. Participants stayed off the private property of the church, displayed their "Buying Guns - CASH" signs, and rescued about 20 firearms. More firearms could have been saved however much of what was being offered for sale was junk. For example, one lady produced a banged up small form-factor Bryco Arms .22LR caliber semi-automatic handgun without a magazine. She was advised to quickly sell it the police before they ran out of money.
The police working the event, 20 - 30 officers, were professional. No major complaints were aired, however, there was one action performed during the event that did cast a shadow. Five officers were standing in the street forming a blockade between the church and private buyers. Obviously, some firearm sellers were intimidated by the show of force and did not run the risk of exploring a better offer for their unwanted firearm.
The "gun rescue" participants had to adjust tactics; sellers were solicited a little further up the street from the church.
In all, some previously unwanted firearms now have a home that appreciates them and the community at large has been educated about the false promises of gun buy-backs. The counter-buy-back has been covered extensively in the media and more people will now demand that their elected officials do more than waste scant public safety resources to solve our violent crime problem. Hopefully, the police department will not have the gall and audacity to stage more of these worthless events in the future.

Rick Ector Discusses The Futility Of The Detroit Police Department's Gun Buy-Back Program - Charlie Langton Show
Earlier today, I made a live in-studio appearance on WXYT 1270's "Charlie Langton Show."
On the program, we discussed the Detroit Police Department's (DPD) plans to conduct a gun buy-back program later today. Today's topic was obviously inspired by recent press releases which allege that the aforementioned event will "clean up the streets" and make Detroit a safer city. Arguing that viewpoint on the show was Reverend Charles Williams. Of course, I argued that gun buy-backs don't work and are nothing more than glorified "dog-and-pony-shows."

A Criminal's Guide To Detroit Police Department Buy-Backs: Disposing of Illegally Possessed Guns For Fun and Profit
This upcoming Thursday, the Detroit Police Department (DPD) will be conducting another "Gun Buy-Back" event at the St. Cecilia Catholic Church in Detroit. DPD will be buying firearms from anonymous participants under a "no questions asked" policy. Non-working firearms will be swapped for $25, operable firearms will bring $50, and so-called "assault weapons" - whatever those are determined to be - will bring $100.
One obvious benefit of participating in this program is having a completely fool-proof means of disposing a firearm that you used to commit a crime. Instead of passing it off to another bad guy and worrying about whether he will later snitch on you, the DPD is willing to partner with you. They will get rid of it for you, not ask you any potentially embarrassing or incriminating questions, and eliminate the time and gas money of traveling across town to discreetly throw it into the Detroit River.
There may be quite a few criminals illegally possessing firearms who are a little apprehensive about "selling back" the implements of their violent crimes. This post will provide several suggestions for rapists, car-jackers, and home-invaders to keep in mind while participating in a gun buy-back to ensure a worry-free experience. Hopefully, if all goes well, you continue to use this service in the future. After all, if they can't catch you on the street with these illegally possessed firearms, they might as well provide you with incentives to enlist your participation in their televised dog-and-pony shows.
Tip #1: Show Up To The Buy-Back Early
There is a chance that you and the DPD may disagree as to the functionality of your firearm. If your firearm is deemed to be "inoperable" in their opinion, you will only be compensated with $25. This flies in the face of common sense, as most jackers know the average robbery victim has no clue about guns and will readily agree to even your most outrageous demands. Thusly, if you arrive early and fail to net the amount of money you need to get your daily bag of weed, you will still have time commit other crimes. In addition, another reason to arrive early is that it is unclear how much money DPD has at its disposal to buy guns. If you get to the event after they run out of cash, you will be given a voucher instead of your promised cash card. So, if you "snooze" you will still lose; you won't have the promised money or have access to your firearm to victimize somebody.
Tip #2: Firearms Should Be The Only Contraband In Your Possession
DPD has only stated that they are buying illegal firearms. As such, do not have a dime-bag of your favorite recreational drug in your possession when at the event. For example, if you smoke marijuana, make sure that you either leave it at home or smoke all of it on your way to the buy-back. Check your ashtrays too for spare trace amounts. It may seems a tad bit unfair, but rules are rules.
Tip #3: Ensure Your Firearms Are Unloaded
The Buy-Back specifically does not state that they are buying ammunition. As such, if you fail to unloaded the cartridges, they will most likely be seized without compensation. Moreover, you wouldn't want to run the risk of being accidentally shot with your own firearm. It would be erroneous and potentially hazardous to assume that all members of the DPD are safe handlers of loaded firearms.
Gun Buy-Backs are excellent events for violent criminals to patronize. Bad guys will be provided a safe haven to discreetly and anonymously dispose of their illegally possessed firearms. They will not have to worry about getting caught with the guns and being linked to any prior shootings and murders with actual physical evidence.
First time gun buy-back sellers will have a problem-free experience if they just obey a few common sense rules: Arrive Early, Ditch The Drugs, and Unload The Gun. Bad guys can sleep easy at night when the DPD conducts these events, as they are proof that the police is still grasping at straws to bring law and order to the streets of our city. As such, there will always be a perfect place to dispose of the evidence.
Good Luck!

A Citizen's Guide To Detroit Police Gun Buy-Backs: How To Legally Buy Firearms Below Wholesale Prices
Despite the fact that the Oakland County Jail is pledging to soon release over 200 inmates due to over-crowding, the announcement that there are at least 21 serial rapists currently operating undetected in the city, and that the current homicide tally in Detroit is over 210 (as of August 12th), the Detroit Police Department (DPD) has announced yet another "Gun Buy-Back" program.
It matters not that these events have failed to lower the crime rate. The only sane reason to waste manpower in this fashion is to generate a positive fluff story in the media that the local police are "trying" to do something about Detroit's violent crime problem. There has never been a gun buy-back event that has been proven to reduce crime anywhere throughout the annals of recorded history.
For the uninformed, this buy-back event pays people to turn in firearms without any documentation for cash without any questions being asked. DPD is paying $25 for broken firearms, $50 for working firearms, and $100 for assault weapons - whatever firearms those may be. Some of the firearms to be sold to DPD by the public are expected to be pieces of junk. These events are usually heavily covered by the local media, so there will be a huge turn-out of gun sellers eager to cash in their guns for some cold hard cash.
It is very likely that a few unappreciated and undervalued gems currently being held by widows will turn up for sale. Thus, it is very possible for interested citizens to position themselves for an opportunity to get a great deal on working quality firearms at below wholesale prices. For example, at a recent buy-back, the DPD reportedly paid a person $50 for a Civil War era handgun.
So, how does an enterprising prospective firearm purchaser make a legal firearm purchase? Easy! Buyers should show up to the buy-back event with large visible signs announcing that they wish to pay cash - above prices being offered by DPD - and lure firearm sellers away from the gun buy-back event. Buyers will need to stay off the private property of the sale site and have the necessary paperwork to legally buy any firearms presented for sale.
To legally buy a handgun from a private seller, a buyer needs to have either a 10-Day Pistol Purchase Permit from his local law enforcement agency or a Michigan Concealed Pistol License along with a Michigan Pistol Sales Record Form. The buyer and seller will fill out the paperwork and the legal private sale of a handgun can be done in mere seconds. Private sales of long guns - rifles and shotguns - do not require any paperwork to be completed.
There are a few risks. For one, you will be in a crime-ridden city with a lot of cash in your possession. Safeguards to ensure you don't get robbed are definitely in order. In addition, you may be dealing with a person who has a loaded firearm and doesn't have any knowledge of safe gun handling practices. So you'll need to be alert and be sure to clearly communicate with your seller.
Other points to keep in mind, are that all sales are likely to be "as-is." So, you'll need to be able to quickly size up and appraise the functionality and worth of the firearm. If you buy a defective firearm, you'll probably have no recourse.
Furthermore, there is also a small chance that you may be unknowingly buying a stolen handgun. You won't discover this until you attempt to register your handgun within 10 days as required by state law. If the firearm was reported as stolen, it will be confiscated by the police and you can file a criminal complaint against the seller.
However, do keep in mind that since you requested the buyer's ID and had him fill out the required paperwork, the risk is, in my opinion, small that someone would commit a crime - selling a stolen firearm - with a fresh trail that will lead back to him.
One final risk that may be experienced is that it is possible that some enterprising buyers may be harassed by local law enforcement. After all, their objective in conducting this buy-back event is to convince citizens to voluntarily disarm themselves despite the city being over-run with violent crime. Depending on the individual officer's training, knowledge of firearms law, and personal beliefs about citizens legally owning firearms, there could be some negative contact with the police.
Personally, I don't think that there will be any negative contact with law enforcement, but it is a possibility so I have mentioned it for the sake of full disclosure. As such, make sure to to exercise appropriate measures as you deem necessary: brush up on your knowledge of "Terry Stops," have an attorney present or on notice, be in the company of friends to serve as witnesses, and being able and ready to record any encounters with the police as allowed by state law.
In conclusion, there are quite a few hurdle to negotiate while trying to legally buy firearms at a police department sponsored buy-back event. However, it can be a very entertaining and rewarding way to spend a few hours of your time. As any antiques-hunter will quickly verify, the thrill is definitely in the hunt. There is a great chance that you will be able to buy a quality firearm at steeply discounted price.
The latest DPD Gun Buy-Back will be Thursday, August 30th, 2012 at the St. Cecilia Catholic Church - 10400 Stoepel Street, Detroit, MI. The sale starts at 9:30a.m. Get there early! Don't forget your sign, RI-60 Forms, and cash! Good Luck!
DISCLAIMER: Nothing in this post should be taken as legal advice. Consult the state of Michigan statutes and an attorney before seriously contemplating any participation in buying firearms at the DPD Gun Buy-Back. Firearm offenses are punished severely.

Video Recap: Rick Ector Appears on the Gun Owners of America Radio Show - August 14th, 2012
Last night I made another appearance on the "Gun Owners of America" radio show. I was interviewed by the host Mr. Bill Frady live via telephone.
During the show we discussed a variety of topics of concern to the gun rights community. As such, I was graciously afforded the opportunity to discuss a project that I had just completed: Our first "Personal Protection Awareness Weekend."
During the first day of our three day event, we had a day filled with educational seminars designed to empower citizens: Ms. Kalyn Risker (S.A.F.E.) discussed issues to empower women, Mr. Robert Louis Robinson II (It Takes A Village Y'all) discussed building stronger communities, Mr. Ed Sikorski (Michigan Taser Distributing) discussed using TASERs as a personal protection device, Officer Lawrence Smith (Detroit Police Department) discussed personal protection strategies, Mr. Phillip Hofmeister (Michigan Open Carry) discussed the legality of handgun open carry, and my organization (Legally Armed In Detroit) discussed Michigan Concealed Pistol Licenses.
During the second day of our event, I provided free shooting lessons for about 40 women at a nearby gun range. To accomplish this task, I had the support of the Target Sports II Gun Range who donated their classroom and range, the Black Hills Ammunition Company donated a case of 9mm FMJ ammunition, and several Firearms Instructors from the region who donated their time to support this event. One of the participants from this activity, Ms. Stephanie Jasky (FedUpUSA), also appears along with me on this broadcast.
The third day of our event was the Legally Armed in Detroit 2nd Annual Open Carry Dinner. We had a packed house of open carrying supporters of the 2nd Amendment who listened to awesome speeches by Mr. Ed Pratt (Gun Owners of America), Mr. John Pierce (OpenCarry.org), and Pastor Kenn Blanchard (Black Man With A Gun).
Please listen to the show and comment with your feedback and questions.

"Kings of Gun Rights" To Headline Gun Rights Event in Detroit
Detroit, Michigan - August 10, 2012 - Gun rights event in Detroit to feature three nationally prominent advocates of the Second Amendment.
"Legally Armed in Detroit," a Detroit based community safety and gun rights advocacy organization is organizing its 2nd Annual Open Carry Dinner on Monday, August 13th. The purpose of the annual event is two-fold - to educate the general public about the legality of Open Carry in the state of Michigan and to provide a venue for local gun rights supporters to show their support for the Second Amendment.
The event's organizer, Rick Ector of Detroit, feels that events such as this dinner are very important to support. He stated, "Gun rights are continually under assault by individuals and organizations who are not above exploiting national tragedies, such as the one which recently unfolded in Aurora, Co. As such, there is a clamor being created by certain elected officials in our government to enact more gun control legislation.
Issues being publicly debated today include another so-called Assault Weapon Ban, a ban on ammunition sales conducted over the Internet, or a limit on the capacities of firearm magazines. Thus, organized pro-Second Amendment activities, such as our event, show that gun rights are still treasured rights recognized by our Constitution and that citizens are willing to fight for them."
Expectations of a great turnout are high, as last year's event drew over a hundred lawfully armed participants. This year's event has been significantly upgraded with the expected presence of three renowned Second Amendment proponents: Pastor Kenneth Blanchard (founder of the Urban Shooter Podcast), Mr. John Pierce (founder of OpenCarry.org), and Mr. Larry Pratt (Executive Director of the Gun Owners of America).
The dinner will be held at the Upper Room Entertainment Complex - 23821 Grand River Avenue, Detroit, Michigan, 48219. The doors open at 6pm and the event is scheduled to end at 10pm. Tickets are available over the Internet: http://laid2012dinner.eventbrite.com/

Rick Ector Shoots Down Talk on Homeland Defense Rifle Bans - Charlie Langton Show
Earlier today, I made a live in-studio appearance on WXYT 1270's "Charlie Langton Show."
On the program, we discussed Homeland Defense Rifles. Today's topic was obviously inspired by recent talk by some folks in Washington who desire to enact more gun control legislation in the wake of the mass shooting in an Aurora, CO movie theatre.

Personal Protection Tip: Always Lock The Doors To Your Residence Upon Entering Or Leaving It
Personal Protection Tip: One way to enhance personal safety at home is to always lock the doors to your residence whenever you enter or leave. Many people are seduced by the relative tranquility of their quiet suburban communities. As a consequence, they fail to exercise the first rule of home safety - securing their home.
Make no mistake - violent crime can happen anywhere without a moment's notice. And when it does, you can count on viewing the faces of stunned neighbors on the nightly newscast stating the "nothing like that ever happens around here."
Today's tip literally comes from the local news headlines. You see, a Michigan couple was startled last night by a man, rumored to be under suspicion of being drunk, who presumably entered the wrong house. In fact, he actually got into bed with the sleeping couple which caused them to vacate their own residence and to call the local authorities.
In the end, the home invader was arrested and charged with a litany of offenses. However, it also very likely that crime could have been prevented had the homeowners simply locked their doors. This incident could also have ended with more dire consequences. Instead, a local couple learned a lesson and maybe someone will get some help for an apparent drinking problem.
Lock your doors.
