Detroit Personal Protection Tip: Look Before You Leap Into A New Relationship

Personal Protection Tip: Look Before You Leap Into A New Relationship - Take your time before getting romantically involved with someone new. You should be aware of any issues before it's too late. Such complications could include violent ex-boyfriends and active stalkers, who could pose a threat to your safety, especially if you are not aware of the difficulties they can present to your safety.

If you have done your due dilligence and have discovered "issues" in the recent history of your prospective mate, you may want to think long and hard before getting too emotionally invested. Today's tip was inspired by a published report in which a man was allegedly shot and robbed of his pants by an ex-boyfriend of a new lady friend.

Rick Ector "Let's It Rip" On School Safety On Local Detroit News Show

Last night, I made a live appearance on Fox2 Detroit's local news show - "Let It Rip."

On the weekly news program, I simultaneously debated both Southfield, Michigan mayor Brenda Lawrence and local attorney Neil Rockind on the subject as to how best America can safeguard its children from harm.

This topic was inspired by fallout created over the senseless tragedy in Newtown, CT whereby a deranged man stole firearms from his own mother after fatally shooting her in the face and ultimately killed 26 people at an elementary school.

Check out the embedded video below to see the debate.

Rick Ector Debates Detroit NAACP President On Rick Snyder's Veto Of SB-59

On Tuesday, I made a live appearance on Channel 7 Detroit Action News.

On the news program, I debated the Detroit NAACP President Reverend Wendell Anthony on the missed opportunity to help keep Michigan residents safe from violent crime and deranged psychopaths. As we all know by now, Michigan Governor Rick Snyder vetoed Michigan Bill SB-59. It is believed by many that the veto was caused by fallout created over the senseless tragedy in Newtown, CT.

If Snyder had approved the bill, it would have led to better trained Concealed Pistol License (CPL) holders being present in Pistol-FREE Zones. Also, it would have required for gun carriers in those areas to conceal their firearms. Under current law, CPL-holders may only open carry in those places.

Check out the embedded video below to see my commentary.

Audio Replay: Rick Ector Debates Conceal Carry in Pistol Free Zones on "Charlie Langton Show."

A couple of days ago - December 17th, 2012 - I made another appearance on the "Charlie Langton Show" at 8:00am on station WXYT at radio frequency 1270 AM. We conducted two live segments over the public airwaves.

During the two live segments over the air we discussed an issue that has been discussed a great deal in the media all across the state of Michigan - Michigan Bill SB-59. This proposed legislation, if it had been enacted, would have allowed people with Concealed Pistol Licenses to legally conceal carry handguns in Pistol-FREE Zones. Currently, CPL-holders can only Open Carry firearms in Pistol-FREE Zones.

Of course, we now know that Governor Snyder veto'd the bill.

Please listen to the show replay and leave your feedback and questions on this blog.

Rick Ector Takes On Calls For An Assault Weapon Ban on Fox2 Detroit News

Earlier today, I made a live appearance on Fox2 Detroit's News.

On the program, I stated my opinion in opposition to renewed calls all across the United States for a new Assault Weapons Ban in the wake of the mass shooting tragedy in the state of CT this past weekend.

In case you haven't heard, a deranged young man killed his mother, stole three of her firearms, and stole her car to drive five miles to an elementary school where he murdered 20 young children and six adults.

The gun control lobby believes the best way to address mass killings is to restrict access to arms to law-abiding citizens.

Personal Protection Tip: Exercise Caution Before Using An Elevator

Personal Protection Tip: Exercise Caution Before Using An Elevator. Using an elevator can be a potentially risky activity if you use one without any forethought. One wrong decision and you can find your isolated in the presence of a predator.

First, realize that greater safety exists with larger numbers. Thus, if you are alone in a relatively sparsely populated environment, check to see if someone suddenly appears to enter at the same time that you wish to do so. If the person gives an odd feeling, pretend like you forgot something and wait for another elevator.

Also, if you are about to enter an elevator and there is at least one sketchy looking person there, you may not want to enter. Furthermore, after entering an elevator while alone, do a quick scan down the hallway for suspicious activity before exiting it at your desired floor. Other safety precautions include always being on the side closer to the floor selection buttons and close to the alarm buzzer.

Personal Protection Tip: Don't Take The "Date Bait"

Personal Protection Tip: Don't Fall For The "Date-Bait!" - Some predators are very calculating. As such, they have been known to solicit the aid of a pretty woman to lure unsuspecting men from bars and eateries.

Once outside and led to a secluded area, the victim is confronted by an armed and dangerous robber. Thus, men should exercise due caution when meeting women in public settings because they could be setting up the men they meet for a robbery.

Why Michigan Should Abolish Handgun Purchase Permits and Handgun Registrations

The state of Michigan may soon abolish handgun registrations and handgun purchase permits. Michigan House Bill 5225 (HB 5225) - the legislation which seeks to abolish the aforementioned pistol reporting requirements - has already been passed by the Michigan House of Representatives and is expected to be put up for a vote within the next few days in the Michigan Senate.

At least with respect to handgun registrations, the state of Michigan is very late to the gun rights party; it is one of a small remaining number of US states that still require them: California, Connecticut, Hawaii, and New Jersey. Although momentum is currently favoring HB 5225's passage, it has not stopped a couple of special interest groups from opposing it.

It came as a surprise to no one that the Michigan State Police has voiced their opposition to the proposed law. After all, they were among the chief naysayers predicting doom, gloom, and cries of "blood running in the streets" when Michigan went to a shall-issue system of issuing Concealed Pistol Licenses (CPL), whereby uniform criteria was applied to all applicants regardless of where they lived. Their forecasts were embarrassingly wrong and injurious to their future credibility of predicting outcomes when gun control measures are rightfully and righteously struck down.

Additional opposition to HB 5225 has been voiced by only eight mayors from among the numerous cities and townships from across the state who also happen to belong to the notorious anti-gun group intentionally misnamed as the Mayors Against Illegal Guns. Recognizable members of that organization include the following mayors: Dave Bing (Detroit), Virg Benero (Lansing), and Brenda Lawrence (Southfield).

Yesterday, I was invited by a local talk radio station program to debate Lawrence in-studio and live over the public airwaves on the subject of HB 5225. Over the course of the hour-long discussion, we covered most of talking points on the subject. In the aftermath of the verbal exchange, I was even more convinced than before we started that the time for the state of Michigan to abolish handgun purchase permits and to dismantle the state handgun registration database was long overdue.

The most quoted justification for the abolition of handgun purchase permits is that the current process to acquire one is redundant, unnecessary, and unduly cumbersome. Under current law, a prospective handgun buyer who has not applied for and received a CPL, will ultimately need to visit their local law enforcement agency at least twice - maybe more - and be subjected to - at the least - two separate, albeit different, background checks by two different organizations to purchase one handgun.

Specifically, the would-be buyer requests a handgun purchase permit from their local police department. That process includes a background query performed on the applicant's criminal background history in the state's Law Enforcement Information Network (LEIN). If the applicant passes, he is given a "10 Day Purchase Permit" which authorizes the buyer to purchase a handgun within the next 10 calendar days.

If for whatever reason a purchase is not made, the applicant must return the original permit and re-apply for another one which will also entail another LEIN check. This process will repeat until either the would-be buyer quits in exhaustion or frustration or he eventually makes a handgun purchase.

It should also be noted that many applicants are discouraged during this part of the handgun purchasing qualification process, especially where certain jurisdictions have "virtual hours" and are not open to the public during conventional hours and are not adequately staffed to handle these permits in an expeditious fashion during this current era of public resource austerity.

During my past several years as a Firearms Instructor in this state, I have heard many horror stories where undue delays - sometimes as long as 42 days in one jurisdiction - successfully convinced several prospective buyers that it would be easier to bypass this process altogether by qualifying for a CPL and using that as a handgun purchase permit which is allowed under current Michigan law.

When a handgun buyer with a "10 Day Purchase Permit" buys a pistol from a gun dealer - a federal firearm licensee (FFL) - the dealer is required by federal law to perform a background check using a federal government verification system: the National Instant Criminal Background Check (NICS). This background check, operational since 1998, is more comprehensive than the LEIN check done by local law enforcement agencies. As a consequence, the police background checks are redundant, unnecessary, and tie up public resources.

When the buyer successfully completes his handgun purchase, he is required by current state law to submit documentation to local law enforcement to have his pistol registered within 10 calendar days. If the registration paperwork is not submitted on time, the buyer could be convicted of a misdemeanor crime for failing to register his handgun which will also lead to a suspension of a CPL if had been issued.

At the time of handgun registration, local law enforcement will then issue a handgun registration certificate. The registration must be kept in his possession for at least 30 days when carrying his pistol to allow enough sufficient time for the LEIN to be updated. If a handgun owner does not have the registration in tow while carrying his firearm and the LEIN is either inaccessible or the registration data has not been entered into the system, the handgun is subject to seizure as a potential unregistered firearm.

The chief justification used by gun control advocates to continue the current system of pistol purchase permits is an unwarranted concern about a lack of governmental tracking of handgun ownership transfers in private sale transactions in which NICS checks are not required to be performed. A common claim made is that ineligible persons - felons and the mentally ill - will now be able to purchase and possess handguns.

This simplistic knee-jerk response boldly ignores the fact that under our current system, ineligible persons already buy or otherwise acquire firearms. Existing laws which legally bar arms from felons and the mentally are still on the books. If a bad guy gets caught with a firearm when he shouldn't he will still be held accountable.

Likewise, any person who knowingly sells a firearm to a prohibited person will also be judged. Ending handgun registrations for law-abiding citizens will not lead to an increase of criminals with firearms. They already have guns and will always have guns via their numerous methods of acquisition. The real issue is whether we - the state of Michigan - can make it easier for good people to have arms to protect ourselves from bad guys.

HB 225, if enacted, will also require the destruction of the state's handgun registration database. Members of law enforcement community have decried this requirement as hampering their ability to solve crimes involving firearms. It has been often said that extra-ordinary claims require extra-ordinary evidence. If their assertion was true we - the general public - would have been inundated with numerous and specific examples demonstrating the aforementioned database as a valuable crime-fighting tool. That has not happened.

The best example that the law enforcement community could do was to suggest that the handgun registration database helped them identify and catch Raulie Casteel - dubbed the I-96 Corridor Shooter. Casteel is suspected of having shot as many as 24 different people on the freeway. Undoubtedly, pressure was high for the law enforcement community to make an arrest in the aforementioned case.

Published reports stated that bullet fragments from the cars of the shot victims were used along with tips to identify suspects in the database. Sounds good, however, there is no direct way to match bullets, without a gun, to a specific owner within the handgun database. Since the gun was in the possession of the shooter while they were looking for him, it is far more likely that they were lucky recipients of a good tip from their hotline that lead them to their suspect. Law enforcement claims about the utility of the database in this case or any other they can concoct are the constituent ingredients of an urban legend.

Gun control advocates, such as the one I debated yesterday are genuinely perplexed why we - Second Amendment supporters - are so insistent on getting HB 5225 passed. It is in its simplest essence an exercise in learning from the mistakes made by others in the past. History books are full of examples whereby citizens were first required by their government to register their arms before eventually having them confiscated. If we truly value the freedoms that we have and we wish to pass them onto the next generation, we must leave them the tools to do - the right to keep and bear arms.

Our case is only made easier by the simple fact the status quo is redundant, inefficient, cumbersome, discouraging, wasteful, and in the end serves no useful purpose. Tack on the fact that Michigan is now considered an odd-ball on the subject, due to it being one of a mere handful of states that still require handgun registration and handgun purchase permits, we are way overdue. The time has come and it is now.

Support HB 5225.

Rick Ector Takes On Michigan's Handgun Purchase Permits and Registration on the Charlie Langton Show

Earlier today, I made a live in-studio appearance on WXYT 1270's "Charlie Langton Show."

On the program, we discussed Michigan's current laws which require handgun purchase permits and handgun registration. Today's topic was obviously inspired by recent developments in our state capital of Lansing whereby the Michigan House recently passed HB-5225, which will abolish the aforementioned practices of handgun permits and registration. The measure is now awaiting approval by the Michigan Senate.

My debate opponent was Southfield Mayor Brenda Lawrence.

Rick Ector To Debate MI-HB 5225 On The Charlie Langton Show Tomorrow Morning

Tomorrow morning at 8:00am - December 5th, 2012 - I will make another appearance on the "Charlie Langton Show" on station WXYT at radio frequency 1270 AM. We are probably going to do two live segments. I will be interviewed live in the studio.

During the two live segments over the air we will discuss an issue that has been discussed a great deal in the media all across the state of Michigan - Michigan HB 5225. This proposed legislation, if enacted, will abolish Pistol Purchase Permits and Pistol Registrations. Currently, Michigan is one of only five states that still have this redundant and antiquated system in place.

Please listen to the show and call in with your feedback and questions.

Listen in live over the Internet.

Personal Protection Tips: Don't Dismiss Warning Signs Broadcast By Familiar People

Personal Protection Tips: Don't Dismiss Warning Signs Broadcast By Familiar People - Today's tip was inspired by news reports of two separate murder-suicide incidents.

In the first story, on this past Friday a Wyoming man after killing another man went to a community college where he then killed yet another man and himself with a knife inside of a classroom occupied with students.

In the other story, a professional football player with the Kansas City Chiefs organization reportedly killed his girlfriend at a team practice facility a short time before venturing to the team's football stadium before killing himself in front of a coach and general manager.

Fortunately, murder-suicide events are not common but enough of them have occurred in the past such that criminologists are confident that warning signs are broadcast in advance. In general, this crime is caused by a feeling of hopelessness which may be brought upon by sudden illness, job loss, or a change in social status.

If you are close to a person who has informed you that they have entertained thoughts of killing themselves or have threatened you with harm, you should take their comments seriously and not dismiss them as harmless statements.

Three Detroit Defensive Gun Use Incidents Shatter Self-Defense Myth

A commonly used justification against the lawful carry of firearms for personal protection is that the bad guys have the element of surprise when they attack. It follows from this line of reasoning that law-abiding citizens, who have guns pointed at them from within the hands of predators, will be unable to draw their own handguns to mount an effective defense.
However, as recounted in an often quoted adage "what many people know is simply not true." As proof, three distinct defensive gun use (DGU) stories that transpired in metro-Detroit within the past week, are summarized in this article. It has been proven that armed victims are capable of lawfully and successfully fighting off violent thugs, even when the bad guys produce their guns first.

To begin, Fox2 News Detroit reported last night that a man was attacked in Oak Park - a Detroit suburb - by two teens he agreed to meet for the purchase of a pair of designer eye-glasses. When the victim forked over the asking price of $500, the teens produced guns and announced a robbery. The would-be victim produced a firearm of his own and shot both robbers. The victim was not harmed. The bad guys received treatment at an area hospital and have been arrested pending criminal charges.

In addition, the Detroit Free Press reported yesterday that a 58 year-old cab driver in Detroit was forced to defend himself over the previous weekend when his fare - a 32 year-old man - announced a robbery. The cabbie, in response to a weapon being produced, drew his own firearm and shot the bad guy. The driver was not hurt, but the would-be jacker is in critical condition at a local hospital.

Moreover, Fox2 News Detroit reported on this past Tuesday that two armed bad guys announced a day-time mugging and carjacking attempt of two would-be victims in Detroit, who were making repairs to a vehicle on the street. One victim was injured when he got into a struggle with one of the bad guys for the control of the gun produced for the robbery. The other victim produced a firearm and shot both bad guys. One jacker was killed at the scene and the other fled the area. The injured victim is expected to survive.

These aforementioned accounts are significant. They prove that not only is it possible for citizens to defend themselves against the lawless but they also send a warning to the bad guys in our community. Another myth bites the dust.

Detroit Community Safety Advocate Launches Fundraiser To Teach Women How To Shoot

Rick Ector, a National Rifle Association (NRA) Credentialed Firearms trainer based in Detroit Michigan, launches fundraiser to teach local women how to operate handguns.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Detroit, MI - November 23, 2012 - Rick Ector, a National Rifle Association (NRA) Credentialed Firearms Trainer and gun rights activist based in Detroit Michigan, has launched a fundraiser to provide FREE firearms training for local women.

Ector is raising the funds because he says he is "sick and tired of hearing about about the level of violent crime in Detroit." A good percentage of that crime, Ector adds, is directed towards women. He also goes on to say, "From the feedback we received from the FREE firearms training we gave to 40 women this past August, we know that women are interested in learning more about guns. This FREE training will remove barriers to entry and help empower more local ladies."

Ector's blog, "Legally Armed In Detroit," is selling metallic collectible challenge coins bearing the organization's logo to offset training expenses: gun rentals, range time, ammunition costs, and targets. Ector is hoping that followers of his blog who also believe in his goal - training local women how to operate firearms - will buy the $25 coins to raise the necessary funds.

The fundraising campaign is limited to 100 challenge coins and is expected to continue through the holiday shopping season. Persons interested in supporting this local training effort, should visit their blog to place an order online.

Personal Protection Tips: Take Stalking Incidents Seriously

Personal Protection Tips: Take Stalking Incidents Seriously - Stalking generally refers to harassing or threatening behavior that an individual engages in repeatedly, such as following a person, appearing at a person's home or place of business, making harassing phone calls, leaving written messages or objects, or vandalizing a person's property.

According to statistics tabulated in the 2010 National Intimate Partner and Sexual Violence Survey, 16% of women and 5% of men respondents stated that they were very fearful or believed that they or someone close to them would be harmed or killed because of a stalking incident.

Each situation is unique however that does not eliminate the need to have the issue resolved. It could be a serious mistake to not seek and implement an effective solution and to instead merely hope that the stalking behavior will safely abate over time. Some solutions may require involving the authorities, a Personal Protection Order, or other personal protection remedies.

Personal Protection Tips: Minimize Time Spent In A Parked Car

Personal Protection Tip: Minimize Time Spent In A Parked Car - Sitting in a vehicle for a prolonged period of time can put you at an elevated risk of being selected as a target. A basic tenet of personal protection is that if you are outside of a residence or another venue is to always be circulating or in motion.

Common activities that people often engage in while in a parked car include waiting on another person to exit a home or conducting a person-to-person conversation in the car outside of the home for privacy. Both aforementioned activities usually result with any occupants of the car not being actively aware of the environment outside of the car. As such, an opportunistic predator may decide to strike. Thus, as a practical matter don't spend much time in a parked vehicle.

Personal Protection Tips: Where Possible, Avoid Walking To Your Vehicle Alone

Personal Protection Tips: Where Possible, Avoid Walking To Your Vehicle Alone. During these perilous and dangerous times, women and senior citizens are especially vulnerable to the depredations of predators while entering parking lots and driveways.

As such, they should not walk to their vehicles alone unless it can't be avoided. When leaving home, a loved one should escort them to their cars and be available to walk them from their cars when they return.

Also, if women and seniors are at a job, church, or some other social function then a co-worker, security guard, or a group of other people leaving the facility should all go to the parking lot together. A violent crime, such as a robbery or a carjacking, can occur at any time and at any hour. There is greater safety in numbers.

Personal Protection Tips: f You Hear Gunfire - Get Down!

Personal Protection Tips: If You Hear Gunfire - Get Down! In a city in which as many as 1,000 non-fatal shootings occur every year, it is imperative that you take appropriate action should unexpected gunfire erupts. If you should ever hear the unmistakable clamor of shots ringing out, immediately stop whatever you are doing and get your body down to the ground.

As the old adage says, "Bullets don't have any names on them." By dropping to the ground, you will reduce the likelihood of being struck by an errant bullet. This tactic should be deployed regardless of your location - at home or outside of it. Furthermore, if you are at home you should not walk over to the nearest window and look out of it, for obvious reasons.

Personal Protection Tips: Commit Key Phone Numbers To Memory

Personal Protection Tips: Commit Key Phone Numbers To Memory - With the advent of technology, especially the prevalence and ubiquity of cell phones, many people today do not make the effort of memorizing key telephone numbers.

They rationalize that they can just look up the needed contact info from their cell phone. However, there may come a day in which you need emergency assistance but do not have access to your phone. Thus, at a minimum, you should commit to memory the phone numbers of all close family members and your attorney.

You should have enough chargers so that they will be available at the following locations: a charger for your vehicle, a charger for your purse or range bag, a charger for your desk at work, a charger for your home, a charger for your "Safe Room," and a charger kept over a frequently visited friend's residence.

Michigan Concealed Pistol License Tips: Think Twice Before Donning A Cape

Michigan Concealed Pistol License Tips: Think Twice Before Donning A Cape. Although Michigan law allows strangers to come to the aid of another facing an imminent threat of great bodily harm, sexual assault, or death, a CPL-holder should think before immediately launching into the role of savior.

For example, if a stranger intervened in a domestic violence situation and the "assailant" was injured or killed as a result, are you one hundred percent sure that the "victim" would testify to the police and the authorities that you deserve a medal?

A would-be hero should be absolutely sure that his perception of what is happening is actually real. In reality, many victims of DV don't want anything negative to happen to their violent loved ones. Thus, if you should see a domestic confrontation and wish to help, you should explore other alternatives before drawing your firearm.

Personal Protection Tips: Allowing A Frisk Offers No Certainty of Safety

Personal Protection Tips - Allowing A Frisk Offers No Certainty of Safety. Citizens who are willing to voluntarily undergo and endure having their body searched for the presence of knives and guns as a condition of entry into a venue, should harbor no illusions of being safe while on the premises.

Many local clubs, parties, and venues advertise their place of business as being secure. However, these screening activities are only as reliable as the people performing them. Accordingly, you might be searched thoroughly and aggressively but people who personally know the screeners may allow be allowed to bring contraband inside.

Never assume that the presence of screening station means that you are safe. In fact, I would assume the opposite to be true. Someone is armed; it just isn't you. In closing, I recommend that you do not patronize establishments that search their customers.
