FAQ: Can I Carry My Firearm With A CPL In My Boat On The Michigan Waters?

Ask The Michigan Firearms Instructor
Q: Are there any laws that prevent me from legally carrying my handgun with a CPL on my boat?

A: I consulted with two sources to research this question. First, I called the US Coast Guard Station in Detroit (313.568.9525) and spoke to a person who identified himself as Gene Davis. According to him, the waters in the Great Lakes Region are state waterways and are subject to state law. He strongly advised to stay clear of the Canadian border on the water.

Legally armed boaters (with CPLs) have to obey the laws on the waterways as if they were on the road - no drinking, law enforcement notification, and etc. He also suggested that I contact the Michigan DNR for any additional state laws.

So, I called the Law Enforcement Division of the DNR in Lansing (517-373-1230) and spoke with a Conservation Officer - Tammy Pullen. She confirmed the info I received from the US Coast Guard. In any case, you are invited to do your research.

Disclaimer
You are strongly encouraged to not only conduct your own independent research but to also consult with a competent and qualified attorney before acting upon any information in this article. Laws covering self-defense, lethal force, firearms, and the Michigan Concealed Pistol License and their enforcement are always subject to change due to laws being amended, politics conducted in the Prosecutor's Office, and election results at all levels of government. Ignorance of the law, legally speaking, is not a valid excuse for running afoul of it. The penalties and fines imposed upon violators of firearms related offenses are stiff and severe.
