FAQ: How To Legally Transport A Handgun In A Vehicle In The State of Michigan?

Ask The Michigan Firearms Instructor
Q: I'm new to owning a handgun and I just wanted to make sure that I'm transporting it in my vehicle correctly. How should it be done?

A: If you have a Michigan Concealed Pistol License, there is no legally prescribed way for the handgun to be secured in your vehicle. Use your best judgement.

However, if you do not have a Michigan Concealed Pistol License, there is a specific manner in which the handgun can be legally transported:

750.231a Exceptions to MCL 750.227

(2); definitions. Sec. 231a. (d) To a person while transporting a pistol for a lawful purpose that is licensed by the owner or occupant of the motor vehicle in compliance with section 2 of 1927 PA 372, MCL 28.422, and the pistol is unloaded in a closed case designed for the storage of firearms in the trunk of the vehicle.

(e) To a person while transporting a pistol for a lawful purpose that is licensed by the owner or occupant of the motor vehicle in compliance with section 2 of 1927 PA 372, MCL 28.422, and the pistol is unloaded in a closed case designed for the storage of firearms in a vehicle that does not have a trunk and is not readily accessible to the occupants of the vehicle.

So, if you do not have a CPL then you should completely unload your pistol, put it in a gun case, and put the gun in the trunk. If you don't have a trunk, put it as far as possible from the driver in your vehicle, so that it is not readily accessible.
