Michigan CPL Class FAQ: When Visiting Family and Friends, Do I Need To Disclose That I Am Carrying?

Ask The Michigan Firearms Instructor
Q: Am I required to inform family members and friends that I am armed when I visit their home?

A: There is no legal requirement to explicitly inform family members and friends that you are armed when visiting their homes. Presumably, if they had a sign on the front door of their home that mentioned a firearms ban, you should obey their stated wishes. Of course, even the most devout anti-gun person would never do such a thing for obvious reasons.

If you normally carry a firearm, I would see no reason not do so. It is a part of your normal every day attire. Also, you should ensure that you have your firearm under your direct control the whole time you are visiting. An example of not following this rule would be leaving your firearm unattended in your purse.

Moreover, if you know that they hate firearms, you should consider not visiting them. In my personal case, anyone who knows me well enough to invite me over to their home already know that I carry at least one handgun at all times. Presumably, they wouldn't invite me over if they didn't want my firearm in my possession. I would never leave my gun in my car, unless I absolutely had to do so.

Moreover, the way I see it is plain: if they don't trust me with a firearm, they don't really trust me without one. Why go somewhere you are not appreciated? My $0.02
