Michigan Firearms FAQ: Does Michigan Require Registration Of Curio and Relic Handguns?

Ask The Michigan Firearms Instructor
Q: Ok Rick, I have one for you. In Michigan if someone possesses a Curio and Relic Federal Firearms License (FFL03CR) which allows them to collect and have shipped directly to them any weapon classified as a curio and relic, do they have to send in a pistol registration form to the state of Michigan when they take possession?

A: Subsection 7 of MCL 28.422 states in part, "This section does not apply to the purchase of pistols from wholesalers by dealers regularly engaged in the business of selling pistols at retail, or to the sale, barter, or exchange of pistols kept as relics or curios not made for modern ammunition or permanently deactivated."

So, you do not need to have a curio or relic firearm purchased with your federal C&R License registered within the state of Michigan, unless you plan on shooting it or carrying it.

Laws covering self-defense, lethal force, firearms, and the Michigan Concealed Pistol License and their enforcement are always subject to change due to laws being amended, politics conducted in the Prosecutor's Office, and election results at all levels of government. Ignorance of the law, legally speaking, is not a valid excuse for running afoul of it. The penalties and fines imposed upon violators of firearms related offenses are stiff and severe.
