Michigan Home Defense Tip: Replace Crescent Locks On Double-Hung Windows

Michigan Personal Protection Tips: Replace Crescent Locks On Double-Hung Windows.

Double-Hung windows are widely used in homes across the country. If you have this type of window in your home, you should strongly consider making an inexpensive security upgrade.

The biggest drawback to these windows is the default security crescent lock that is often used. It can be easily circumvented by placing a long flat object, such as a knife, where both panes meet and flipping the lock open. An inexpensive update is to replace the crescent lock with a keyed window lock.

Of course, a bad guy can always break out the window and climb inside, but some are reluctant to risk injury to themselves with jagged glass present and others are reluctant to create the amount of noise necessary. Home-invaders prefer to have the window cleanly and quietly opened.

Another counter-measure includes always having either a storm window or a window screen in use, depending on the season, as a further deterrent. The extra barrier adds another layer of security that may influence the bad guy seek either another portal to gain entry or another home to invade.
