NYE: One Last Night For Bad Guys To Pad The Crime Statistics

NYE: One Last Night For Bad Guys To Pad The Crime Statistics

On this night in Detroit, you will typically hear the clarion calls for citizens to not "ring in" the new year with gun-fire aimed at the sky. Personally, I think it is more of an announcement that this home is not safe to invade than celebration.

However, make no mistake about it, anyone who does such a thing is a complete jackass. Those bullets have to come down somewhere. We all have heard the adage that "Bullets don't have names on them." Responsible gun owners don't engage in such behavior contrary to the promotion being ran by a local gun range on Eight Mile Road.

Tonight is a great night for bad guys to conduct invasions and burglaries. Many people, even in Detroit, go out to commemorate the new year: church, night clubs, and to see the latest phenomenon - the dropping of the Olde English D downtown.

We already know that the local police department does not respond to "unverified" house alarm runs. Furthermore, they'll probably be running around the city trying to respond to all of the gun-fire calls. Thus, expect response times, regardless of the way they are calculating them these days, to be noticeably longer.

I am not telling you to not go out tonight, but at least make your home look occupied and do not tell everybody on Facebook and Instagram that you are going out tonight to get "turnt up."

Additionally, watch your alcohol consumption levels and responsibly drink. There are going to be a lot of inebriated drivers on the road tonight. Furthermore, keep your levels of awareness on high. Bad guys are going to be on the prowl tonight looking for unaware and tipsy victims to rob, rape, and carjack.

It is not my objective to be a "Debbie Downer," but I do want you to apprised of the fact that tonight is the last night of the year for bad guys to do what they do - violate others.

In all, be safe, be aware, and be armed.

Hopefully, I will see you all safely into 2014.

How To Not Negligently Shoot Your Wife While Cleaning Your Handgun

How To Not Negligently Shoot Your Wife While Cleaning Your Handgun

In the newspaper today, it was disclosed that a Harrison Township man "accidentally" shot his wife while cleaning his handgun. The incident, in my opinion as a Firearm Safety Instructor, was completely avoidable and would not have happened if some basic firearm handling rules were understood and followed by the operator. Ironically, this unfortunate event was preceded by another preventable incident a couple of days ago whereby another man shot himself while reaching for his wallet at a Home Depot Store.

The very first thing a person should do before ever attempting to handle or operate a firearm is to completely read and understand information in the Operator's Guide. If there is anything that is not clear, the operator should consult with other trusted sources of info: the manufacturer's web site, the manufacturer's help line, the gun dealer who sold him the gun, or a well regarded firearm safety expert.

Nearly all Operator's Guides will inform the user when his firearm should be cleaned. Most will say that at a minimum that it should be "field stripped" and cleaned after every discharge. Additionally, when "not in use" the gun should be inspected and cleaned at a prescribed interval. Failure to properly store and clean a firearm could lead to rust, corrosion, malfunctions, or unsafe pressures.

Moreover, while handling a firearm, especially while attempting to clean it, basic fundamental safety concepts should be followed:
- Always Treat Firearms As Loaded.
- Always Keep Firearms Pointed In A Safe Direction.
- Always Keep Your Finger Off The Trigger Until Ready To Discharge

So, if we follow the aforementioned rules, the operator should do the following:
- Pick up the gun with his finger off the trigger and immediately point it in a safe direction and keep it aimed there.
- Verify that the handgun is unloaded.
- Re-Verify that handgun is unloaded.
- Follow instructions in the Operator's Guide to safely disassemble the handgun.
- Follow instructions in the Operator's Guide to clean the handgun.

There is no such thing as an "accidental discharge," unless the firearm is defective. A handgun will not discharge unless it is loaded AND the trigger is pulled. If it failed to do exactly that, it would be unsafe to operate. The aforementioned incident was no accident. It was either intentional or negligent.

If you do not know how to safely clean or handle a firearm, you should not do so until you have been trained. If you need training, GET SOME.

Should Holsters Be Used When Carrying A Loaded Firearm?

Should Holsters Be Used When Carrying A Loaded Firearm?

In Michigan, holsters are not legally required BUT I strongly suggest that everyone who carries a handgun does use one. I didn't think this post was necessary until I got a comment on one of my Facebook pages from a guy who said, "I don't use a holster and I've never once had a problem. I wear tight snug pants even hop fences at work and not once has it ever moved or budged."

Of course, I took the bait and asked WHY he does not use one. I didn't, as of then, get an acceptable response. I can't think of any legitimate reason why a person carrying a pistol would not use a holster. Who has $600 to buy a handgun and can't afford at least an "Uncle Mike" holster? For real?

Usually, a person without his firearms rights intact will carry without a holster to avoid suspicion when stopped by an officer. You see, an open line of questioning will occur - even after the gun is tossed in the bushes or atop someone's building - if he is wearing a holster.

The main purpose of a holster is to affix the firearm onto your body or to safely secure it in some other close location so that it can be accessed or drawn without pulling the trigger. A good holster covers the trigger. As such, the pistol will not discharge or "go off" until the trigger is intentionally pulled.

Not wearing a holster while armed is a disaster in waiting. If you are lucky, you won't hit anything. In this scenario, you could still face criminal charges. Moreover, if you are not so lucky you might shoot yourself and still face charges. Ask Plaxico, the clown at Home Depot, or the lady who not too long ago shoot herself in a Detroit casino. Yet still, you might even kill yourself or someone else.

It is a flimsy excuse to say that forgoing the holster is justified because you haven't shot yourself yet. Keep doing it, you might get your wish.

7 Ways To Carry A Holstered Handgun

7 Ways To Carry A Holstered Handgun

The local media reported that a man "accidentally" shot himself while reaching for his wallet at a Home Depot store. Of course, this joker was either not using a holster or had one that did not guard the trigger. As such, here are 7 different ways to carry a concealed handgun:

1. Waist (IWB/OWB)
2. Shoulder
3. Pocket
4. Ankle
5. Thigh
6. Belly-Band
7. Bra

Comment and let me know how many ways you carry your guns!

2013 Annual Compilation of Anti-Gunner Lies and Illogic

2013 Annual Compilation of Anti-Gunner Lies and Illogic

I recently noticed a link on my Facebook personal page that promised to load into my browser the biggest moments of 2013. Of course, a link that sounds that interesting could not be resisted. So, I perused the list of status updates from 2013 and noticed that some of them had to do with my gun rights advocacy.

During my trip down memory lane, I came across numerous examples of my status messages addressing what I felt were "Anti-Gunner Lies" and "Anti-Gunner Illogic." Check them out below and leave me a comment.

Anti-Gunner Illogic

- Guns are evil but if bad men appear we should call the police - people with guns.

- Banning heroin, cocaine, crack, and meth has been successful in the War on Drugs.

- Autos should have a fuel tank capacity of five gallons because nobody needs to drive that far.

- Free speech does not apply to the Internet because the Founding Fathers used quills and ink.

- Registering firearms belonging to good people protects the public against firearms illegally carried by criminals.

- A Gun-FREE Zone sign will stop armed criminals from entering the premises.

- We only trust our children with teachers who do not have guns. Teachers with guns are bad people.

- Homes with swimming pools have a higher risk of children drowning than homes that do not have swimming pools.

- It makes perfect sense for government officials - mayors, city council, and etc. - to have armed security details paid with public dollars while at the same time residents in some of those same jurisdictions can't legally carry arms. Government, it seems, is more important than the people they allegedly represent.

Anti-Gunner Lies

- We don't want your guns. We just want to know where they are located.

- Registering firearms is a great crime-fighting tool.

- LEFTs and buy-backs lower the violent crime rate.

- Banning heroin, cocaine, crack, and meth has been successful in the War on Drugs.

- Banning guns will lower the violent crime rate.

- Openly carrying a firearm will scare children.

- A semi-automatic firearm is a WMD that should only be used by our military.

What examples of Anti-gunner Lies and Illogic have you heard?

Michigan Lethal Force: Are You Aware Of The The Objectives And Risks Of Using It?

Lethal Force: Are You Aware Of The The Objectives And The Risks Of Using It?

It comes as no surprise to almost everyone that I meet, that the state of Michigan recognizes the use of lethal force for lawful self-defense. However, most of the confusion that I, as a Firearms Trainer, see from many folks is a lack of understanding as to exactly when lethal force is justified and when it is not.

This observation is particularly acute in the resulting discussion after a high profile self-defense case. Sometimes opinions about the "goodness" of a shooting are widely divergent despite the commonality of a certain set of disclosed facts.

Typically, it is apparent that there may be differing opinions about the relevance of certain disclosures revealed by the investigation of the case by the authorities or other interested parties. As such, the prism by which some people evaluate an incident is sometimes fueled by not having an accurate understanding of the law.

However, there is one thing that interested parties of different opinions do agree upon: Owning, carrying, and operating a firearm for self-defense is a grave responsibility. As such, the operator has three primary objectives to accomplish if he uses self-defense with a firearm: survive the encounter, not be convicted of a crime, and not lose all of his assets in a civil suit.

To begin, merely carrying a firearm does not automatically confer victory to a "perceived" victim when he is attacked. His level of awareness at the time of the incident and his level of training with his gun will both be factors but they do not guarantee success.

If he succeeds in defeating his assailant, his actions will be subsequently investigated for compliance to the statute. As such, it is important that every gun owner is aware of what the laws "says" about lethal force and not have any vague interpretations of what he "thinks" it is.

If a gun owner is blindly living by the mantra that "it is better to be judged by twelve than carried by six," he must not be aware of the long odds of getting through this ordeal unscathed due to his failure to conduct his due diligence on the law.

In Michigan, lethal force is only justified under a narrow band of circumstances. If a necessary element of that defense is not present, the shooter will in all likelihood be found guilty of something. If he is convicted, he faces fines, court costs, and of course the loss of his freedom. Additionally, he also faces the risk of being sued civilly in a wrongful death suit. Conversely, if the shooting was ruled justified, he would not have been prosecuted and would have been immune from a civil suit.

If you are a home-owner, a business-owner, a firearm owner, a CPL-holder, an attorney, a law enforcement officer desiring to be current, a member of the media, a bodyguard, a security guide, an armed courier, or you are simply fascinated with the subjects of lethal force and self-defense, you need to attend the "Michigan Lethal Force Seminar: Laws Every Firearm Owner Must Know."

It is a detailed accounting of Michigan's laws on the subjects you need to know. Ignorance of the law is not a valid excuse. Knowing the law can solve the "getting convicted" and "getting sued" problems. The operator still has to also survive the incident but that is beyond the scope of this seminar. This seminar's focus is strictly on the law.

The seminar will be held on Saturday, January 11, 2014 at 9am in downtown Detroit at the Law Office of Terry L. Johnson. The event will be moderated by me - Rick Ector - and feature an extensive Q&A Session to resolve any nagging concerns you have about your understanding of the law.

The seminar costs $99. It is a small price to pay for peace of mind. Not attending this seminar can cost you far more: attorney fees, lost time from work, reputation damage in the media, court costs, and your freedom.

Parking is ample but space in the seminar is limited. To RSVP, go this link ASAP:http://www.eventbee.com/v/rick9mm/event?eid=100117644

Name That Firearm Safety Violation - Mikhail Kalashnikov

In the following photo, which fundamental safe firearm handling rules, if any, are being violated?

This picture is a snapshot of Mikhail Kalashnikov, inventor of the AK-47 Rifle. He died yesterday at the age of 94. Of his famous invention he said, "When a young man, I read somewhere the following: God the Almighty said, 'All that is too complex is unnecessary, and it is simple that is needed' ... So this has been my lifetime motto – I have been creating weapons to defend the borders of my fatherland, to be simple and reliable."
