Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was a gun owner and at one time had so many guns that a visitor to his home described it as an arsenal. He also applied for a concealed carry permit but was denied even though his home was fire-bombed.
Dr. King, his contemporaries, and his followers were often protected by men of God with guns - the Deacons for Defense. These facts do not diminish his legacy - Not in the least. However, they do show that he recognized gun rights as a means for black folks to protect themselves.
