Firearm Safety Tip: Don't Handle A Gun If You Lack Training

Firearm Safety Tip: Don't Handle A Gun If You Lack Training
A Texas man came across an allegedly unattended firearm in the restroom of a Bob Evans Restaurant. Upon mishandling the loaded firearm, the customer negligently shot a cooler. The incident was incorrectly reported as an accident in the media. However, the unvarnished truth is that there is no such thing as a firearm accident.
Firearm safety is not rocket science. It only requires a modicum of training and the desire to obey some fundamental gun handling rules. The first rule is to keep the firearm pointed in a safe direction. Whereas no one died from the mishandling of the firearm, that result was achieved via luck. Someone could have been easily killed.
In addition, another fundamental rules of firearm safety is to never touch the trigger until you are ready to shoot. The operators either picked the gun up with his finger on the finger or committed another rule infraction - not treating it as loaded - and wanted to hear the gun click.
A negligent discharge occurs when reasonable caution or due care is not exercised when handling a firearm. Not knowing and demonstrating adherence to simple firearm safety rules certainly fits the bill.
Accordingly, if one has not received basic handgun handling skills, he should not handle a firearm. He should leave the area, don't touch, and tell a trained gun handler where it is loaded.
