A: This is a commonly asked question usually posed to me by prospective first-time pistol purchasers who also have a desire to soon acquire a Michigan Concealed Pistol License (CPL).
The prospective buyer rationalizes that he wants to practice shooting before he receives "official" instruction in a professional class. I can certainly understand the desire to already be a good marksman before attending a CPL Class. This proposition, of course, is predicated on the availability to receive sound and fundamental instruction, which will be conducted in the CPL Class anyway. New shooters "should" receive instruction from only qualified trainers.
It is possible to legally buy a handgun in Michigan without first receiving CPL training, however, the bigger issue is whether the student will properly practice without prior training. If we assume that the first time handgun buyer already has learned the fundamental rules of firearm safety and already has learned the fundamentals of marksmanship, then training before the class is a noble gesture.
However, if firearm safety was not learned before venturing to a shooting stall, an unfortunate incident can occur at the range which could result in a serious injury. Moreover, even if the students is a safe gun operator but has not learned proper shooting form and technique, he will "spin his wheels" trying to be good shooter and later have a difficult time trying to unlearn bad habits.
Furthermore, the prospective buyer should conduct his due dilligence with respect to buying the best pistol for him. Buying a handgun is not a trivial activity unless you have unlimited resources. Whereas, a person with lots of discretionary income can buy several firearms to test the waters of gun ownership, the vast majority of students I meet and teach are only able to buy just one firearm at a time.
If your budget only allows for the purchase of just one handgun, then it is imperative that you make a wise decision. An unwise purchase will experience a tremendous hit in depreciated value if it needs to be quickly resold to recoup funds for another purchase. Many handgun buying considerations are important. Those variables are so important that the subject has its very own training module in the Concealed Pistol License (CPL) Class. Those factors include, but is not limited to, the following: Caliber, Size, Fit, Quality, Cost, and Type. Taking a CPL Class before buying a defensive handgun is a wise decision.
In conclusion, first-time handgun buyers who desire to acquire a CPL, should take a Concealed Pistol License Class before they make a firearm purchase. Doing so, will enable them to make a good decision on which gun to buy, ensure a firm grasp of firearm safety, and prevent bad marksmanship habits from being learned.
