In a speech I delivered last week, I talked about friendship. At this point in my life, I have significantly more friends than I had several years ago. It is safe to say that just 10 years or so ago, that I did not have many friends.When I say "friends" I do not mean people with whom I am merely connected to on social media. Rather, I specifically mean folks whom I may have met online - or not - but have actually met, broke bread with, and see regularly - both locally and nationally. They are folks whom I truly enjoy seeing - again and again.
A genuine friendship, as I see it, is a relationship upon which is based on mutual respect and trust. Among the many people I sincerely count as friends, every demographic is present. To be my friend, the following are NOT relevant: race, gender, age, sexual orientation, political party, or religious affiliation.
The accidentally discovered litmus test is gun rights. If you trust me with a firearm and won't try to take it away, you can be my friend. As your friend, I will trust you and respect you, as well. I can't say that about everybody that I know.
