Rick Ector: The Last Word on the Home Depot Shooting

Rick Ector: The Last Word on the Home Depot Shooting
By now you have undoubtedly heard about the CPL-holder who allegedly opened fire on an alleged fleeing shoplifter a few days ago. If reported published statements in the media are accurate, her alleged actions are inexcusable and unlawful.
Accordingly, she has been charged with Reckless Discharge of a Firearm. I predicted a few days ago that this would the charge that she would face. In a way, it is both accurate and it does not completely throw the book at the suspect. She could have justifiably faced even more serious charges.
In the aftermath, I must confess that I am surprised that this story has been widely reported all over the globe. Apparently, many if not most media outlets appear to have a vested interest in portraying CPL-holders as lawless vigilantes. To be completely honest, nothing could be further than the truth. In fact, this CPL-holder's actions were an aberration. The overwhelming majority of CPL-holders have been found to be the most law-abiding segment of our society - even more so than law enforcement officers. As such, many CPL-holders have lawfully and justifiably both defended themselves, their families and others without running afoul of the law.
The responsibility of lawfully carrying a firearm is grave. A firearm is truly a tool of last resort. CPL-holders know this and accept the requisite responsibility as an honest exchange for being able to carry concealed firearms. By the same token, we know that if we are not responsible, that we will be held accountable for our transgressions and if we are not responsible we will be sanctioned and serve as a cautionary tale for others to wield lawfulness, reasonableness, and common sense as effortlessly as their carried firearm.
No responsible gun owner can condone the actions of the aforementioned shooter. However, lets keep everything in proper perspective. For example, just a few days ago a citizen was shot and killed in the parking lot of another Home Depot store in Detroit and no one outside of the state reported it. Another day - another death - and nobody in the national media blinked. The ability to carry a firearm, in our community is a real need - as much so as the requisite responsibility to be lawful or suffer the consequences.
The Home Depot Shooter will be punished and the rest of us CPL-holders will continue to be law-abiding. This incident will not define us.
