LAID Black History Month Hero - Montford Point Marines

LAID Black History Month Hero - Montford Point Marines
Rick's Firearm Academy of Detroit continues it's daily tribute to heroes and patriots this month in commemoration of Black History Month #BHM. Today's honoree is the Montford Point Marines.

With the beginning of World War II African Americans would get their chance to be in “the toughest outfit going,” the previously all-white Marine Corps. The first recruits reported to Montford Point, a small section of land on Camp Lejeune, North Carolina on August 26, 1942. By October only 600 recruits had begun training although the call was for 1,000 for combat in the 51st and 52nd Composite Defense Battalions.

Initially the recruits were trained by white officers and non-commissioned officers (NCOs) but citing a desire to have blacks train blacks, the Marines quickly singled out several exceptional black recruits to serve as NCO drill instructors. In January 1943, Edgar R. Huff became the first black NCO as a private first class. In February Gilbert "Hashmark" Johnson, a 19-year veteran of the Army and Navy, became the first Drill Sergeant. By May 1943 all training at Montford Point was done by black sergeants and drill instructors (DIs), with Johnson as chief DI. Both Johnson and Huff would be renowned throughout the entire Marine Corps for their demanding training and exceptional leadership abilities.

The men of the 51st soon distinguished themselves as the finest artillery gunners in the Marine Corps, breaking almost every accuracy record in training. Unfortunately, discrimination towards African American fighting abilities still existed and when shipped to the Pacific, the 51st and 52nd were posted to outlying islands away from the primary action. The only Montfort Marines to see action, and record casualties, were the Ammunition and Depot Companies in Saipan, Guam, and Peleliu. Private Kenneth Tibbs was the first black Marine to lose his life on June 15, 1944.

The Montford Point Marine training facility was abolished in 1949 after President Harry S. Truman issued Executive Order 9981 which desegregated the U.S. Armed Forces.

Rick Ector's Michigan CPL CCW Class - Sunday, March 11, 2018

Rick Ector's Michigan Concealed Pistol License (CPL) Class - Sunday, March 11th - Tuition $149 - 10am

We are pleased to announce our next Michigan Concealed Pistol License CCW/CPL Class!

Class DATE: Sunday, March 11th, 2018 - RSVP NOW

If you have a desire to qualify for a Concealed Pistol License (CPL), so that you will become safe, register for our next class.

Everyone claims to be the best. I am going to show you why we are the best.

Our classroom sizes are limited to ensure a proper learning environment. You will be comfortable asking questions that are most pertinent to your situation. We understand that being stuffed in a sardine can with 50 other students leaves much to be desired.

Our legal module is taught by a credible practicing criminal defense attorney. The legal module will NOT consist of an attorney - who never actually practiced law - lecturing on your duties, rights, and responsibilities under the law on a DVD.

Your safety and freedom deserve much better. Other providers, if they teach the law at all, only offer up their unprofessional and untested opinions. Our attorney is also a regular subject matter expert featured on the news and local talk shows.

I daily receive phone calls from students who took the $50 classes and short-changed themselves. The irony is that is that instead of calling their original trainer, they end up calling me. By this time, all I can do is refer them to competent counsel and hope that the amount of trouble they get into is minimized.
You have a choice: pay just a little more now for a superior class or pay a ton more later.

We provide one-on-one shooting supervision in the shooting booth. We understand that you need expert instruction on the safe operation of a pistol from a whisper away. Unlike the others, we do not have one instructor who watches five students on the range at the same time. We are right there with you each and every step along the way to ensure that you are safe while learning.

Finally, our Chief Instructor actually teaches the class. He does not rely upon the playing of out-of-date and boring DVDs as a substitute for quality and up-to-date instruction. Our training is a 100 percent live and entertaining presentation which ensure that you fully grasp and understand the material well after you leave the classroom. My students see for themselves how fast the GroupOn classes are over before we reach the half-way point of our class.

Our Chief instructor has been training citizens, such as yourself, for over ten years with a 100 percent safety record. We are especially adept at training first-time shooters, women, and seniors. We are not fly-by-night operators. We have seen many training providers come and go over the last decade.

Only quality Instructors have staying power. We are here for the long haul. So, if you ever have a need for follow-up, you know that you can find us - even if it is five years later.

If you want the best instruction, you have to be taught by the best. You deserve it, your family deserves, and your safety at home and out in the streets requires it. Don't be penny-wise and pound foolish with your safety. Go with the best. Me.

When my students call me, they are referring family members and friends to take our class. When graduates from other training classes call me, they were failed by their instructors and need serious legal help. Get it done right the first time.

Sunday, March 11th, 2018
Location: L.A.I.D. HQ
30305 Schoolcraft Ave.
Livonia, MI
10am Start
Tuition ($149)

Range expenses will be incurred at the range to handle gun rental, range time, ammunition costs, and a fee for a target. The estimated fee is $35.

Chief Firearm Instructor Rick Ector is a recognized expert in firearm safety and has been featured extensively in the national and local media: New York Times, Associated Press, UPI, USA Today, Fox News, NRAnews, Wall Street Journal, The Guardian, National Public Radio, "Let It Rip," the Detroit Metro Times, Guns Digest, Tactical-Life, The Truth About Guns, The Politics Daily, Fox News Detroit, The Detroit News, and the Detroit Free Press.

Ector has the following NRA Certifications: Training Counselor, Chief Range Safety Officer, Home Firearm Safety, Pistol, Shotgun, Rifle, Personal Protection I, Personal Protection II, Shotgun Shell Reloading, and Metallic Cartridge Case Reloading.

Recent Awards and Honors Bestowed to our Chief Instructor include the following:

- Ector was featured in a new nationally broadcast 9-part NRA series entitled "The DL with Dana Loesch" in early 2017.

- Ector was featured as a Gun Rights Advocate in the Comedy Central Special entitled "Jordan Klepper Solves Guns" in mid-2017.

- Ector was named as a 2016 "Defender of Liberty" by the Second Amendment Foundation at the Gun Rights Policy Conference (GRPC) in Tampa, FL.

- Ector was named the 2014 MCRGO Guns Rights Advocate of the Year.

- Ector was named the Keynote Speaker of the 2014 Michigan Second Amendment March.

Do NOT Take Our Class If...
- You don't want a 2 hour live lecture from a respected and practicing criminal defense attorney on the law. You will learn the law!
- You are comfortable with up to 60 sixty students stuffed into a classroom. In my class you will be comfortable.
- You don't want to be one-on-one with a Firearm Instructor in the shooting booth with you.
- You are not willing to spend at least 8 hours in class to get the best possible start as a CPL-holder.

If you want to take the best CPL Class, enroll in our class:

LAID Black History Month Hero - Kenn VF Blanchard

LAID Black History Month Hero - Kenn VF Blanchard
Rick's Firearm Academy of Detroit salutes Black History Month by honoring patriots who fought for freedom. Today's honoree is none other than Pastor Kenn Blanchard. #BHM
He is the original "Black Man With A Gun" who penned a pro-gun book for the black community with the same title. He is the most famous and recognized black man in the pro-gun community.
You name it - he's done it or is about to do it. By day, he's a government G-Man and off-the-clock he is a Pastor of his church. He has lobbied for right-to-carry laws in several states, been a federal Firearms Instructor, host a weekly pro-gun podcast, and has an Internet ministry for people in need of healing.
On a personal note, he has been the biggest influence in my path as a gun rights activist. Of all things that I can tell you about him, nothing is more important than the fact that he is my friend.
Today, we salute Pastor Kenneth VF Blanchard - a true American patriot.
If you don't like guns, you probably don't know your history.
True story.

LAID Black History Month Hero of the Day - Sojourner Truth

LAID Black History Month Hero of the Day - Sojourner Truth
Rick's Firearm Academy of Detroit continues it's daily tribute to heroes and patriots this month in commemoration of #BHM. Today's honoree is Sojourner Truth.
Born Isabella Baumfree in 1797, Truth was born into slavery to the Baumfree family in Swartekill, Ulster County, New York.
Truth’s time as a slave is poorly documented, despite her work as an abolitionist regularly drawing on her own negative experiences. However, what we do know is that she was sold three times in 4 years between 1806 and 1810.
It would take another 16 years before Truth would escape, with her Infant Daughter Sophia, in which she did during 1826; a year before New York State enacted the Emancipation Act.
Sadly, Truth had to leave her other children behind because they were not legally freed in the emancipation order until they had served as bound servants into their twenties. She later said “I did not run off, for I thought that wicked, but I walked off, believing that to be all right.”
It would later emerge in 1827 that her previous owner, John Dumont had illegally sold her five year old son into slavery. Requiring legal help, Truth sought the expertise of the Van Wagenen family, who helped Truth take the issue to court, eventually concluding the case in 1828 after several months of legal proceedings. Truth’s victory would be hailed as the first Black woman to go to court against a White man and win the case.
Truth had a life-changing religious experience during her stay with the Van Wagenens, and became a devout Christian. In 1829 she moved with her son Peter to New York City, where she worked as a housekeeper for Elijah Pierson, a Christian Evangelist.
During her time in New York, she befriended Mary Simpson, a grocer on John Street who claimed she had once been a slave of George Washington’s. They shared an interest in charity for the poor and became intimate friends. In 1832, she met Robert Matthews, also known as Prophet Matthias, and went to work for him as a housekeeper at the Matthias Kingdom communal colony. Elijah Pierson died, and Robert Matthews and Truth were accused of stealing from and poisoning him, however both were acquitted.
The adoption of the name ‘Sojourner Truth’ would not come until 1843 whilst she was living in New York. The reason for the change of name is unknown as it was not documented, nor was it the name she took on upon her Christian Baptism.
Sojourner’s work as a Women’s rights activist is best surmised by her 1851 ‘Ain’t I A Woman?’ speech which she delivered in an impromptu style at the Ohio Women’s Rights Convention in Akron, Ohio. The speech is best known for it’s recreation using a Deep Southern accent, however this is largely considered as a satirical take on the speech as Truth held a Dutch accent, due to her first language being Dutch.
During the Civil War of 1861- 1865, Truth helped recruit black troops for the Union Army; after the war, she tried unsuccessfully to secure land grants from the federal government for former slaves.
In 2014, Truth was included in Smithsonian magazine’s list of the “100 Most Significant Americans of All Time.”

Rick Ector Shares Thoughts on Protecting Children at School From Mad Men

Rick Ector Debates School Safety on Let It Rip - Feb. 22, 2018

Rick Ector, a Gun Rights Advocate and Firearm Instructor, makes an appearance on Let It Rip to discuss Mass Shootings at Schools.

A 19 year-old arrived at a school and murdered 17 people. Predictably, gun control advocates are not satisfied with punishing the actual criminal; they want to punish all gun owners too.

Check out the discussion and leave your thoughts in the Comments section. For more info on Personal Protection and the Michigan Concealed Pistol License visit our blog on the Internet - Legally Armed In Detroit - http://www.legallyarmedindetroit.com

LAID Black History Hero of the Day - Frederick Douglass

LAID Black History Month Hero of the Day - Frederick Douglass
Rick's Firearm Academy of Detroit continues it's daily tribute to heroes and patriots this month in commemoration of #BHM. Today's honoree is Frederick Douglass.
He was born in a slave cabin, in February, 1818, near the town of Easton, on the Eastern Shore of Maryland. Separated from his mother when only a few weeks old he was raised by his grandparents. At about the age of six, his grandmother took him to the plantation of his master and left him there. Not being told by her that she was going to leave him, Douglass never recovered from the betrayal of the abandonment.
When he was about eight he was sent to Baltimore to live as a houseboy with Hugh and Sophia Auld, relatives of his master. It was shortly after his arrival that his new mistress taught him the alphabet. When her husband forbade her to continue her instruction, because it was unlawful to teach slaves how to read, Frederick took it upon himself to learn. He made the neighborhood boys his teachers, by giving away his food in exchange for lessons in reading and writing.
At about the age of twelve or thirteen Douglass purchased a copy of The Columbian Orator, a popular schoolbook of the time, which helped him to gain an understanding and appreciation of the power of the spoken and the written word, as two of the most effective means by which to bring about permanent, positive change.
Returning to the Eastern Shore, at approximately the age of fifteen, Douglass became a field hand, and experienced most of the horrifying conditions that plagued slaves during the 270 years of legalized slavery in America. But it was during this time that he had an encounter with the slavebreaker Edward Covey. Their fight ended in a draw, but the victory was Douglass', as his challenge to the slavebreaker restored his sense of self-worth.
After an aborted escape attempt when he was about eighteen, he was sent back to Baltimore to live with the Auld family, and in early September, 1838, at the age of twenty, Douglass succeeded in escaping from slavery by impersonating a sailor.
He went first to New Bedford, Massachusetts, where he and his new wife Anna Murray began to raise a family. Whenever he could he attended abolitionist meetings, and, in October, 1841, after attending an anti-slavery convention on Nantucket Island, Douglass became a lecturer for the Massachusetts Anti-Slavery Society and a colleague of William Lloyd Garrison.
This work led him into public speaking and writing. He published his own newspaper, The North Star, participated in the first women's rights convention at Seneca Falls, in 1848, and wrote three autobiographies. He was internationally recognized as an uncompromising abolitionist, indefatigable worker for justice and equal opportunity, and an unyielding defender of women's rights.
He became a trusted advisor to Abraham Lincoln, United States Marshal for the District of Columbia, Recorder of Deeds for Washington, D.C., and Minister-General to the Republic of Haiti. Frederick Douglass died late in the afternoon or early evening, of Tuesday, 20 February 1895, at his home in Anacostia, Washington, DC."
Frederick Douglass sought to embody three keys for success in life:
1. Believe in yourself.
2. Take advantage of every opportunity.
3. Use the power of spoken and written language to effect positive change for yourself and society.
Douglass said, "What is possible for me is possible for you." By taking these keys and making them his own, Frederick Douglass created a life of honor, respect and success that he could never have dreamed of when still a boy on Colonel Lloyd's plantation on the Eastern Shore of Maryland.
