Ask The Michigan CPL Class Instructor: Clarification on the Detroit Lions Player Jameson Williams Gun Incident

 Ask The Michigan Firearm Instructor

Hello, Rick.
I have an open/concealed carry question.. Referring back to the situation a few weeks ago involving the Detroit Lions receiver Jameson Williams being stopped by DPD and them finding Jameson's piston under the seat. Even though the piston was legally owned by Jameson, he faced the possibility of prosecution for having the gun in the car. Can you explain where he went wrong and what he should have done while riding with a legally own firearm in the car?
Rick Ector
He should consider getting a CPL. However, if he had his unloaded pistol in a case, separated from the ammo in another area, and had his firearm in the trunk or rear-most part of the vehicle, this issue would not have been a media spectacle. There is a lot more to discuss, but his brother had a CPL, so this incident was a training exercise for the police
